Few places in Mysore serve a soft, steaming-hot idli early in the morning. One among them is Mahesh Prasad. Fluffy Idli, paired with piping hot sambar and a mildly spiced coconut chutney, it’s exactly the kind of breakfast you crave after a morning climb to Chamundi Hill.
And then… came the vada moment. We’d told the waiter we were happy with just the idlis, but in true old-school South Indian restaurant fashion, what followed felt like a playful dare - as if to say, “Really? You’ll walk out without a vada?” Before we could respond, one appeared on the table. At ₹30 a piece, especially next to the ₹40 plate of two idlis, it’s a sly little move you won’t forget.
The benne masala dosa was crisp and golden, though a touch less time on the tawa would have avoided the faint bitterness in spots. Still, the buttery richness worked beautifully with the chutney. The kara bath ended up stealing the show - smooth, flavourful, and a reminder that this humble South Indian tiffin can outshine bigger names on the menu when done right.
Filter coffee here remains a safe bet, and the thought of coming back during the monsoon for their bonda soup feels almost inevitable. Come evening, Mahesh Prasad takes a surprising turn with an Indo-Chinese menu featuring noodles, gobi manchurian, and more.
Whether you’re looking for breakfast in Mysore, a post-climb refuel near Chamundi Hill, or just a spot for reliable South Indian food, Mahesh Prasad still delivers — with a few quirks to keep you talking about it long after the last sip of coffee.
